Jaws, from the best selling novel by Peter Benchley, is about a seaside resort named Amity that is terrorized by a great white shark. Police chief Brody orders the beaches to be closed, but the mayor and local businessmen insist they stay open – with tragic results. Eventually, Brody is forced to take to the sea with a professional shark hunter and an ichthyologist to hunt down the shark and save the town. In 2001, the film was selected for preservation in the US National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant."
Starring Roy Scheider, Robert Shaw and Richard Dreyfuss. Directed by Steven Spielberg.
